Event Description

Cedar Amateur Astronomers presents Solar Saturday!

Join us at the Eastern Iowa Observatory and Learning Center at 3 PM to learn more about our sun and enjoy safe views through our solar filtered telescopes!

As witnessed by the recent aurora, our sun is currently experiencing a very active period of its solar cycle. Learn more about what drives this activity and how it affects the aurora. Look through several of our telescopes equipped with special solar filters to safely view the sunspots and solar prominences during this especially volotile period.

Carl Bracken of Cedar Amateur Astronomers will give a presentation about the Sun beginning at 3 PM. Current solar cycle 25 is running well ahead of forecast by almost a year, and already surpassing forecasted strength as measured by monthly sunspot totals. Join us on Saturday 13 July 2024 at the Eastern Iowa Observatory and Learning Center from 3-6pm to explore our star together and learn about some of the ways our star impacts the ‘Global Electric Circuit’ and drives a wide range of effects on the world we live in.

Come early or stay after the presentation to tour the observatory, visit the exhibits, and get fantastic views of the sun!

This event is free and all ages are welcome.
