Event Description
Just what is mindfulness and how might it be of use? These gentle evenings (July 22, Aug. 5, Aug. 19 and Sept. 2) at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) will offer brief introductions to aspects of mindfulness and self-compassion and lots of reflective invitations to pay attention to where in the body we may be holding struggle, joy, loss, anger, hope, contentment, denial, courage, tenacity and other emotions. Mindful meditation practices help us to sense shifts that occur within and help us make choices for a healthier life. Mindfully spending time in nature prevents health problems such as stress, depression and anxiety, and improves our sense of resilience and interpersonal relationships. Weather pending, we hope to take practice inside and out. Come once a week for four weeks to explore and begin to establish a practice of mindfulness. Our weekly topics include: Peace of Mindfulness: Living in the Moment (July 22), Communicating Mindfully (Aug. 5), Mindful Response Minus Impulsive Reaction (Aug. 19) and Fostering Mindful Self-Compassion (Sept. 2). How might mindfulness help? A practitioner with severe asthma learned to bring a mindful attention to his breath. A corporation finance officer, by becoming aware of stress in his body, learned to patiently relax his throat muscles and was able limit his verbal attacks to staff. A frazzled single mother was able to acknowledge her tension and feeling of being overwhelmed, opening the space to become more respectful of herself and her boys. A person undergoing cancer treatment used mindfulness to calm his fear of pain and learned to offer loving-kindness while experiencing chemotherapy. A person learned not to be discouraged by seemingly futile political debate and found her voice. These are just a few examples. Come explore how simple mindful practices can help you! Facilitator Ann Jackson, PBVM, is Prairiewoods’ coordinator of spiritual services. Blending love of nature, literature, leadership and spirituality, Sister Ann delights in listening with others to the energy of Spirit stirring creativity, passion, discernment and service. Newly certified as a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach, she is committed to mindful living and compassion, evolving consciousness, and personal and social transformation by bringing mindfulness to local and global communities. She enjoys offering spiritual direction and facilitation to individuals and groups. The cost of this four-part series is $75.
