Event Description

What makes a plant invasive? How do you identify an invasive plant on your property? Join Christine Kirpes at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) on a walk to look for problem plants and learn how to manage them. We'll discuss how to protect native and horticultural plantings, as well as what not to plant. We will share resources to extend our learning about species not found at Prairiewoods. This will be an outdoor program; participants must be able to walk over uneven terrain. Christine Kirpes, Prairiewoods’ Garden Coordinator, has managed the Green Prairie Garden at Prairiewoods for over a decade on behalf of Prairiewoods and Metro Catholic Outreach. After earning two life science degrees, she ended up in Cedar Rapids in the early ‘90s. She became involved with Indian Creek Nature Center, volunteering as a naturalist off and on for 20 years. She enjoys hiking and taking advantage of various environmental and spiritual programs at Prairiewoods. She, her husband and their three adult children love getting outside, especially visiting national parks together. Christine’s interests also include tending to her collection of houseplants, gardening, reading fiction, dancing, visiting new places, and almost any activity in or around water. The cost is $10. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
