On Thursday, October 10 at 12:00 p.m., the International Writing Program (IWP) presents a panel discussion, Trials and Tribulations of Literary Translation, featuring IWP participants Tomás Downey (Argentina) and Florencia del Campo (Spain), joined by guest author Kazim Ali.
This conversation will explore the complexities of literary translation: how meaning shifts across languages, how cultural context shapes interpretation, and what is both lost and gained when literature crosses borders. Panelists will share their experiences as writers working within and across languages, offering insight into the creative and technical challenges of bringing stories into new linguistic and cultural landscapes.
The International Writing Program, founded in 1967, has hosted more than 1,600 writers from over 160 countries. Based at the University of Iowa, the IWP fosters global literary exchange, introduces international voices to U.S. classrooms, and builds bridges between writers and readers worldwide.
