The University of Iowa Department of Classics and Religious Studies welcomes Sarah Dees, a scholar of American religion who is currently writing a spiritual biography of Dolly Parton, for Dolly Parton, Faith, and American Culture: Remembering an Unlikely Angel.
How did Dolly Parton become more than a country music superstar? What role did Christianity play in her life, music, and public identity? Why did so many people come to see her as a moral or even spiritual figure? And what can Dolly’s remarkable appeal across cultural divides teach us about religion, celebrity, gender, generosity, and American life?
Dees will share insights from her research before joining University of Iowa professor Brandon Dean for a public conversation and audience Q&A exploring Dolly’s Christianity, Appalachian roots, music, public persona, philanthropy, and enduring place in American culture.
