Enigma: Marvin Cone in the 1960s

Marvin Cone’s interest in walls, doors, stairs, and the intersections and interactions of their planes eventually led into his abstract compositions of the 1950s and 1960s. This exhibition focuses on just one decade in which Cone sought out the many different permutations that abstraction allowed. That is not to say that Cone abandoned all representational art. While working on his totally abstract compositions, he was still painting landscapes, barns, and other works, but they were a much smaller percentage of his output than they had been previously. It was in his abstractions that Cone found new territory for his creativity. Ever searching, Cone found, later in life, yet another arena to explore.
