Event Description

Attend the next Kirkwood Community College Liberal Arts Faculty Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 5, featuring Blaise Boles, Associate Professor of Biology at Kirkwood! His lecture is: "You Are What Your Microbes Eat: How Microbial Metabolites Influences Health & Disease." This lecture will explore how microbial metabolites — small molecules produced when microbes process components of our diet — influence health and disease. Ultimately, the microbiome illustrates how human biology cannot be fully appreciated without understanding the microorganisms that have co-evolved with us. Join us at 11:15 a.m. in 2082 Cedar Hall! This event is free and open to the public. Abstract: The human body is home to trillions of microorganisms that collectively form the human microbiome. This lecture will explore how microbial metabolites—small molecules produced when microbes process components of our diet, influence health and disease. Additionally, how different diets may influence what microbial metabolites are produced will be considered. Ultimately, the microbiome illustrates how human biology cannot be fully appreciated without understanding the microorganisms that have co-evolved with us. Bio: Blaise Boles earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Iowa in 2006. At Kirkwood, he teaches biology and nutrition courses and maintains a strong interest in co-evolution, human health, and the biology of aging.
