Playtime Poppy Children’s Theatre and Washington High School Present
“Swiss Family Robinson”

 

Cedar Rapids, IA:  Playtime Poppy Children’s Theatre is excited to announce that Washington High School will present Swiss Family Robinson, based on the classic Johann David Wyss novel--the story of a family that ends up shipwrecked on an abandoned island. In this family-friendly episodic adventure, adults and children alike will enjoy action and adventure, tied together with learning and conversation about what it takes to confront seemingly insurmountable obstacles and learn to thrive in a new environment. Performance dates and times are:

Playtime Poppy productions are appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $5 for all ages and will be available at the door or online. The online site will be announced on the Playtime Poppy website, Facebook page, and Instagram closer to the production. This is the final high school production in Playtime Poppy’s 73rd Season.

 

On April 9, Playtime Poppy and Washington will present Operation Backstage which will give over 150 area 3rd grade students the chance to experience life behind-the-scenes and see how a play is brought to life on stage. On April 16, the Washington auditorium will be filled with students who are invited to a special matinee production of Swiss Family Robinson. Teachers will be given an Imagination Guide, which will also be available on our website, filled with information about the play, activities with curricular connections, and resources for additional learning.
 

A Playtime Poppy Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a Cedar Rapids Community School District high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, commitment to their community, and enthusiastic dedication to theatre. The 2025 Scholarship Application is due April 11, 2025.

 

Playtime Poppy Children’s Theatre is also busy bringing their arts-integrated, classroom programs to elementary students in partnership with the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Book Adventures, an interactive storytelling program, promotes reading comprehension and prepares younger elementary students to engage with story, characters and emotions. One Great Line brings theatre into 5th grade classrooms. Students learn how to use the design process and explore the technical and dramatic aspects of theatre.
