Over 49 years ago, the two intrepid Voyager spacecraft began their journeys of exploration of the outer planets, continuing to the edge of the Sun’s extended atmosphere, the heliosphere, and finally entering interstellar space, sampling the stuff between the stars. Currently traveling at about 37,800 mph, the Voyagers are on escape trajectories from the Sun’s gravity and are now orbiting the galaxy. On 18 November at 4:16 AM Voyager 1 will be more than 16 billion miles or just over 172 Astronomical Units from Earth. At that moment, it will be one light-day from Earth. It takes light (or a radio signal) from Voyager one day to traverse that distance. The Sun is just 8 light-minutes from Earth. In his presentation he’ll discuss some of the many discoveries of these two spacecraft, the science they are currently doing in the interstellar medium, and the trials and tribulations of making such a long journey. You don't want to miss this one!
