Event Description

55+ Guided Tour to Veterans Memorial Building. Join the Bridge to Opportunities senior group for a guided tour of the iconic Veterans Memorial Building in downtown Cedar Rapids that is a site on the National Register of Historic Places. The Memorial Lobby will greet you along with the building museum manager for a 30-minute orientation to include building history and how Grant Wood was involved in the Memorial Window project. The tour will continue with the newly opened World War II Local Showcase display, unveiled June 6th to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This tribute gallery highlights local connections to WWII, exploring the experiences of area veterans in both the European and Pacific theaters. Don’t miss a traditional Memorial Room containing local veteran’s artifacts from the Civil War to World War I and beyond. An opportunity to explore the Horsky collection of model airplanes, and an archive show highlighting paintings, aerial photographs, and memorable events that are held in the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Whether parking downtown or on the 2nd Avenue bridge for this offsite event, bring your car license plate number and quarters or credit card.  A Bridge volunteer will be available at the pay station directly across from the front entrance of the Vets Memorial building to assist you with paying for your parking.  Because of construction, access to the second avenue bridge for parking is ONLY available from the west side of the river.
